BOSS OF THE APPLESAUCE has a huge, sturdy 48" scape with 4 and 5 way branching carrying as many as 32 buds and it instantly reblooms for a very long bloom season starting midseason and going very late. One of the most mesmerizing faces in the garden, BREAKING NEWS is an 8" lilac with a greyed-lavender watermark and an irregular diamond-dusted applique throat that splatters out onto the petals. I told many of my hybridizing friends about the unheard-of performance of this cross of REDNECK REUNION X WEBSTER GIRLS because the first year after its selection as a huge 12" diamond dusted cream flower, it produced a whopping 149 flowers on 5 scapes on a 3 fan clump! The scapes had incredible 8- and 9-way branching and were 50" tall. As the clump matured, it still produced incredible plants with somewhat smaller flowers (9 1/2" to 10") and fewer buds averaging 30 per scape with scapes averaging 45". It is still strongly recurrent and EASILY fertile both ways, even when it is hot. The hybridizing potential for powerful, northern hardy, reblooming tets is unlimited for this robust, powerhouse plant that has continued to perform during two summers of drought. I heard the name spoken by a sportscaster during a Clemson football game, and knew it was the perfect name for this daylily from two of my favorite hybridizing plants for tall, sturdy, well budded, and ideally branched scapes. It has inherited beautiful foliage, as well, with dormant, hardy plant habit. BRING IN THE BEEF blooms mid to late season so it is a season extender with blooms extending well into the late season with its continuous rebloom. Tetraploid. I call this my purple WEBSTER'S PINK WONDER because the plant habit is identical. It received a dose of WEBSTER'S PINK WONDER from both parents, but its siblings were all tall and red or rose so this seedling's color came as quite a hybridizing bonanza thanks to recessive genes. I've used this plant heavily in my hybridizing program for large purples with watermarks. It's a big 10" violet purple bitone unusual form with a light raspberry pink "Munson type" watermark, a fine white edge, and a wide cream to green throat. Scapes are 31" with 4 to 6 way branching, 24 to 26 buds, and it reblooms for a long bloom season. Easily fertile both ways even in hot weather. Semi-evergreen with a dormant resting bud above ground. CONTRARY MARY is a 7 1/2" bud-building rose pink with a cream pink watermark and large deep-set ruffles highlighted by fine pink edges. Despite the rounder form, the tall and stately 38" scapes with their widely spaced 3-way branching averaging 17 buds won me over by doling out picturesque blooms over a long season.
